How do I link my outfit, make-up look or room tour piece by piece?

Note the brand, model and variant of each piece: colour, size and ideally the EAN for clothes, shade and volume for make-up, dimensions and material for furniture. Select exactly that variant in the shop; for clothes, the colour, as your community picks their own size. Only then copy the link, and test it. Mark similar or sold-out pieces as such. In Germany, label the post “Werbung” (advertisement) and give each affiliate link an asterisk and a short note.

Why the wrong colour is a different item

36

EANs needed for a T-shirt in nine colours and four sizes, according to GS1 Germany: one per variant.

GS1 Germany, EAN numbers

According to GS1 Germany, every product variant needs its own EAN when products differ in size, colour or packaging, for example. A lipstick in a different shade is therefore a different item, and so is a sofa with a different cover. If you link the wrong colour, your community ends up on a different item from the one they saw on you.

How to find the exact item

CategoryWhat defines the variantWhere to find it
Fashionbrand’s article number or EAN, colour, sizelabel, order confirmation, product page
Make-up and personal careproduct line, shade number, volumepackaging, EAN under the barcode
Furniture and decordimensions, material, colour or fabricorder confirmation, product page, assembly instructions
  1. List every piece in the order people see it: top to bottom for an outfit, in the order you apply it for make-up, room by room for a room tour.
  2. For each piece, note the brand, model name and the details from the table. You can often still find the order confirmation in your inbox.
  3. Open the product page in the shop, select the colour, shade or version and only then copy the link. Some shops put the selected variant into the web address, others don’t. If the address doesn’t change after you select it, name the colour or shade next to the link and show the piece in your own photo. Your community picks their own size, but say which size you wear.
  4. Open the link in a private browser window and compare the image, colour name and, if the shop lists it, the EAN with your piece. Shops sometimes use their own article numbers; according to GS1, each EAN exists only once worldwide.
  5. If the piece is no longer available, label the replacement as shown in the next table.

Exact, similar or sold out: how to label it

CaseHow to write itWhat to check
Your exact piece“Blazer: brand, model, colour”The link opens that exact colour.
Same model, different colour“same model in black, mine is sand”Your colour is mentioned.
Similar piece“similar” right next to the itemSay what is different.
Successor, new season“newer version”Name the differences if you know them.
Sold out, vintage, home-made“no longer available” or “vintage, not linked”No link, or a replacement marked “similar”.

Recommending products with affiliate links is usually a commercial practice. Germany’s Unfair Competition Act (UWG) defines this as any conduct for the benefit of your own or someone else’s business that is directly and objectively connected with promoting sales (§ 2(1) no. 2 UWG). That means § 5 UWG on misleading commercial practices applies too.

Under § 5(2) no. 1 UWG, untrue or otherwise deceptive statements about the main characteristics of goods are misleading, explicitly including their availability, type, version and quality. Under § 5(4) UWG, images can count as such statements too. If you show your blazer and link a different one without saying so, that can be misleading. Writing “similar” right next to the item helps avoid that impression in the first place. If you present a piece as an imitation of a branded product, for example as a “dupe of [brand]”, further rules can apply, including § 6(2) no. 6 UWG.

The text for your look: templates with an affiliate note

For affiliate links, the guidance of Germany’s media authorities (Medienanstalten) recommends an asterisk and an explanation right next to the link. In a list of several pieces, each affiliate link gets its asterisk, and one sentence directly above or below explains it. The guidance doesn’t mention links to your own creator storefront specifically. If your affiliate links sit there, it makes sense to put the asterisk and sentence in both places: on the mention in your caption and on the storefront link in your bio. Adjust the sentence to how you earn: from purchases, from clicks or from both.

Clicks or purchases through affiliate links earn you money, which counts as consideration. Under § 5a(4) UWG, anyone who fails to make the commercial purpose clear acts unfairly, unless it is directly obvious from the circumstances. The guidance also lists places to buy and affiliate links as signs of advertising intent. So the templates put “Werbung” (German for advertisement) first, as the guidance recommends for text. Even without an affiliate link, the guidance calls for “Werbung” or “Anzeige” clearly at the start of image and text posts if a piece came from a collaboration or you got it for free and the brand expects a post. Abbreviations such as “ad” are not enough.

If you show in the video where to buy the pieces, the guidance treats the video or that sequence as advertising. Then “Werbung” in the description is not enough: it needs to appear on screen for as long as that sequence runs, clearly legible and not covered by on-screen controls.

How it works on wyrld

On wyrld, you paste the link to a product from a partner shop or pick it from the catalogue. wyrld recognises the product by brand, name and variant, for example a particular perfume in 50 ml, and looks for the same item across more than 90,000 partner shops. If wyrld finds it in several shops, your community sees the offers with prices side by side. wyrld creates the affiliate links. Paste the link only after you have selected the colour or shade, then check in your storefront that the right variant shows.

Create a collection for each look or room and show up to five of your own images per product, such as the jacket on you in exactly your colour; the first image is your cover image. Put your storefront link in your bio. Depending on the shop, you earn per click, per sale or both. Commission on purchases is based on the net value after returns and cancellations: if a piece goes back because the colour is wrong, there is no commission on it. You label your own posts on Instagram, TikTok or YouTube; under the wyrld creator terms, that is your responsibility.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Can I link a similar item if the original is sold out?

If you do, label it “similar” right next to the item, not somewhere further down. Otherwise it can look like the piece from your photo, and in Germany that can be misleading under § 5 UWG. Ideally say what is different, such as the colour, material or cut.

Where do I find the article number or EAN of a piece of clothing?

Often on the label, in the order confirmation or on the shop’s product page. A shop’s own number often won’t help you at another shop, though, because shops sometimes assign their own article numbers. The EAN is unique: it is the number under the barcode, usually 13 digits long, and according to GS1 Germany each variant needs its own. Note the colour name as well.

How do I link the right shade of foundation or lipstick?

Note the product line, shade number, shade name and volume from the packaging. Select exactly that shade in the shop before you copy the link, and open it in a private browser window to check. If the packaging shows an EAN, you can also use it to compare the variant, provided the shop lists the EAN on its product page.

Does every link in an outfit list need an asterisk?

Every affiliate link does, according to the guidance of Germany’s media authorities: it names the asterisk (*) and an explanation right next to the link. One sentence directly above or below the list explains the asterisk. Plain links with no collaboration or affiliate connection, such as to the photographer who took the picture, usually need no label, according to the guidance.

How do I link a room tour with lots of furniture?

Room by room. Number the pieces in the order they appear in the video, or add timestamps, and give dimensions and material for each. Create a separate collection for each room, for example in your creator storefront. If you show in the video where to buy the pieces, the guidance calls for an on-screen “Werbung” label as well.

How do I link a whole outfit with just one link?

Collect the pieces on one page, such as a creator storefront or a link-in-bio page, and put that link in your bio or on the link sticker in your story. In the caption, name each piece with brand, model and colour and point to the link. Give the link an asterisk and a sentence saying these are affiliate links.
